How to Choose the Perfect Construction Company for the Job

If you are looking to build a home or need a construction company for another purpose, it can be hard to pick which one is best. Sometimes the company has a focus in one area over another and may not be suited to the job you would like to have done. Let’s take a look at a few things to consider and what to look for before making a decision on which company to hire.

  1. Licensing –

Is the construction company fully licensed and up to date? A reputable company will have the proper licensing and be able to show you or provide you with the details. An unlicensed company may not be able to provide quality up to code services.

  1. Insurance –

Check to see if the company that you are considering has contractors general liability insurance and that their employees are covered under workers compensation insurance – ask for coverage verification. As a homeowner, this will protect you in case of any accidents or injuries on your property.

  1. Contract-

For any company that you choose, never agree to have someone do work without a contract. A contract should include all details of the building project including materials, scope, cost, completion date, etc. When they hand you the contract, read in great detail and ask for clarification on anything that you don’t understand – never sign before reading.

  1. Check References-

It is important to read reviews of any construction company that you are considering. The Internet offers a wealth of information, and it is easy to find reviews on almost every company. You can also request references from the construction company. They should give those willingly and not have a problem providing references if they do good work. Another place to check would be with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB, track complaints from customers that have submitted to them against companies (including any resolution or response) and they provide a grade. Grades given by the BBB are similar to a school – A – F, so the lower the grade the worse the company is.

  1. Communication-

Talking in great detail with the companies you are considering during the decision making process is key. Ask questions on their communication style, how often you will receive updates, what they will do if something doesn’t go as planned, etc.

  1. Compare Bids –

Do take bids into consideration. However, be aware that the lowest or highest bid isn’t always best. While it may fit better into your budget, if you pick based upon price you may end up paying more in the long run if you don’t check for references, licenses and insurance.

When choosing a construction company, it is imperative that you do research to pick the best company to do the job. Take your time and don’t make a quick decision, you will be better off for it.
