How-to Decrease Workplace Stress

Workplace stress is a common problem, and workers at all levels of the hierarchy and in all industries may suffer from its effects. This type of stress may make you physically ill in some cases, and it often leads to discontentment, low morale, reduced productivity and other negative consequences. The good news is that there are several simple steps that you can follow to improve your level of workplace stress.

Focus on Health 
You can take steps to reduce your stressors at work, but no workplace or position is without some stressors. You must physically be able to manage those stressors when you are exposed to them. Unfortunately, if you are tired, hungry or otherwise not properly nourished, you may be less likely to manage your day’s stressors. Get ample sleep at night, and eat a balanced diet. It is also helpful to incorporate at least a moderate amount of exercise into your daily routine. Exercise can help you to stay healthier for long-term stress management benefits, and it also may help you to reduce the current stress that you feel.

Create and Follow a Schedule
Most workers have at least a few different tasks that need to be completed daily, and some have a dozen or more items that require their full attention at different points throughout a typical workday. When you have numerous tasks weighing on you, it is easy to feel intense pressure and stress. One way to address this is through a schedule. List all of the items that need to be done in a order of priority. Give yourself ample time to address each to-do item.

Minimize Distractions 
It can be difficult to follow a schedule when your workday is filled with distractions. Distractions may come from your cell phone, social media, coworkers, clients and more. Identify what your primary distractions are, and take steps to eliminate or reduce them. For example, closing your office door at work for a few hours at a time may reduce distractions from coworkers. You may also turn off your personal cell phone while at work. Only check it a few times throughout the day to ensure that there are no emergency situations at home that require your attention.

Stress is a normal part of life, but there are times when workplace stress is too substantial to manage. While you may not be able to eliminate all of your daily stressors at work, you can see that you can take numerous steps to make them more manageable. Keep in mind that each person is unique, and each workplace is different. it is important that you take time to analyze your situation and to find a few stress management techniques that work well for you.
