Mistakes to Avoid for First-Time Travelers

Traveling outside of your everyday surroundings can open up your eyes to new experiences and change your outlook on life. It’s amazing what you can learn about the world and yourself when you are hiking through a beautiful forest or looking at one of the world wonders. If the travel bug has bitten you for the first time, avoid these mistakes to make your trip as magical as you imagine it.

Over Packing

Over packing is a fatal flaw of many travelers. Yes, it is scary to imagine being in a foreign country and realizing you forgot something, but managing too many items can add unnecessary stress to your trip. Keep a small list of essentials that you have to bring from home and consider using hotel amenities or purchasing items there to cover the rest.

Over Planning

There are so many sights to see and so many things to try on vacation that it can feel like the only way to see it all is to plan everything to the smallest detail. This is a huge mistake. You are going to see things that weren’t in the tour guide, spend more time than you thought at a museum, or just be too exhausted to get up and explore. This will happen, so prepare by leaving room in your itinerary for…anything.

Not Having Proper Identification

It’s obvious that you need an active passport to travel internationally, but it is vital that you take the time to research documentation requirements in the country you’re visiting as well. Some are strict about passport requirements and travel visas, so make sure you have everything you need to leave and re-enter your home country.

Carrying too Much Cash

Using only cash on a vacation can be a bit of a hassle. Not only is it bulky and harder to track while out shopping, if you lose any, there is a slim chance you will see it again. Another danger of carrying cash is potential theft. Tourists are easy targets for thieves and scams in host cities. A credit card is harder to use if stolen and can be deactivated as soon as you know it’s gone.

Focusing on the Perfect Picture

It’s trendy to have dozens of enviable vacation pics, but don’t get too caught up in making your vacation look Instagram worthy. Focus on having fun and enjoying the experience in front of you. You will feel so much better knowing that you got to really experience your trip.

Traveling is fun and helps us to be well rounded individuals. Avoid the mistakes above and your first trip definitely will not be your last!
